Charlie Kirk Killed in Utah University Shooting

Tragedy at Utah Valley University

Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, during a speaking event at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem. The incident, which has been widely condemned as a political assassination, occurred around 12:20 p.m. MDT during a stop on his “American Comeback Tour.”

Kirk was on stage in the university’s quad, conducting a question-and-answer session with students, when a single gunshot was fired. According to reports from digitaltrendstoday.com, the shot originated from the nearby Losee Center, approximately 200 feet from where Kirk was speaking. Eyewitnesses stated that Kirk was struck in the neck and immediately slumped in his seat. The campus was thrown into chaos as attendees fled and security personnel rushed to his aid.

Following the shooting, UVU was placed on lockdown, and all classes were canceled. A massive law enforcement response, including local police, the Utah Highway Patrol, and the FBI, descended on the campus to secure the area and begin a search for the perpetrator. University officials later clarified that despite initial erroneous alerts, the suspect was not in custody and a manhunt remains active.

Widespread Condemnation from Political Leaders

The news of Kirk’s death sent shockwaves across the nation, drawing swift and unified condemnation from across the political spectrum. President Donald Trump was among the first to confirm Kirk’s death on his Truth Social platform, calling him a “truly Great American Patriot.” He later ordered all American flags to be flown at half-staff until Sunday evening in Kirk’s honor.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed his devastation and vowed to hold those responsible accountable. “Violence has no place in our public life,” Gov. Cox stated on X. “I am working with Utah law enforcement and the FBI to bring to justice the individual responsible for this tragedy.”

Leaders from both major parties echoed the sentiment, calling for an end to political violence:

  • Vice President JD Vance remembered Kirk as a “genuinely good guy and a young father.”
  • House Speaker Mike Johnson led a moment of prayer in the House of Representatives, calling political violence “detestable.”
  • Former President Joe Biden stated, “There is no place in our country for this kind of violence. It must end now.”
  • California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) described the attack as “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible.”

Other prominent figures, including Utah’s congressional delegation, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and former Rep. Gabby Giffords, also issued statements expressing their sorrow and denouncing the violent act.

A Prominent Voice Silenced

Charlie Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012 at the age of 18, building it into one of the nation’s largest and most influential conservative youth organizations. Known for his energetic and often pugnacious style, he became a leading voice for young conservatives and a staunch ally of President Donald Trump. Through campus events and his popular podcast, “The Charlie Kirk Show,” he engaged in debates on free markets, limited government, and Christian values, mobilizing a new generation of activists.

Kirk is survived by his wife, Erika Frantzve, and their two young children. In a statement, Turning Point USA confirmed the loss of its co-founder, saying, “Charlie went to his eternal reward with Jesus Christ in Heaven.” As the nation mourns, the investigation into his murder continues.
