Jackpot Rolls Over to Become Fifth Largest in Game History
The Powerball jackpot has surged to an estimated $1.3 billion after no ticket matched all six numbers in the highly anticipated drawing on Monday, September 1, 2025. The grand prize, which stood at $1.1 billion, will now continue to grow, making the upcoming prize the fifth largest in Powerball history and the ninth largest in U.S. lottery history.
The next drawing is scheduled for Wednesday, September 3, just after 11 p.m. ET. A potential winner could choose between the annuitized $1.3 billion prize, paid out over 30 years, or a lump-sum cash option estimated at $589.0 million before taxes.
Monday’s Drawing Results
The winning numbers for the Monday, September 1 drawing were:
- White Balls: 8, 23, 25, 40, 53
- Red Powerball: 5
- Power Play Multiplier: 3x
Second-Tier Winners Score Big
While no one claimed the jackpot, the drawing produced 12 tickets worth $1 million or more across the nation. Ten tickets matched all five white balls to win the $1 million prize. These winning tickets were sold in the following states:
- California
- Florida
- Kentucky
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- New Jersey (2)
- New York
- Pennsylvania
- Virginia
Additionally, two tickets, sold in Montana and North Carolina, matched all five white balls and included the Power Play option, doubling their prize to $2 million each. The drawing also created 124 winners of $50,000 and another 25 winners who took home $150,000 by using the Power Play feature.
A Three-Month Climb
The jackpot has been steadily growing for three months. Monday’s drawing was the 40th consecutive drawing since the grand prize was last won on May 31, 2025. In that drawing, a single ticket sold in California claimed a prize worth an estimated $204.5 million, as reported by digitaltrendstoday.com. This year has seen four previous jackpot winners, including prizes of $328.5 million in Oregon on January 18, $527 million on March 29, and $167.3 million in Kentucky on April 26.
How to Play Powerball
Powerball tickets cost $2 per play and are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
To play, you select five numbers from 1 to 69 for the white balls and one number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball. Players can also choose the “Quick Pick” option to have the numbers randomly generated. For an additional $1 per play, participants can add optional features to increase their potential winnings:
- Power Play: This feature can multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times. The Match 5 prize of $1 million is automatically doubled to $2 million if Power Play is purchased.
- Double Play: Available in select states, this add-on gives players’ numbers a second chance to win in a separate drawing with a fixed top cash prize of $10 million.
The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. However, the overall odds of winning any prize are approximately 1 in 24.9. As the jackpot continues to swell, players are reminded to play responsibly.
