Former NYC Mayor Hospitalized After Aiding Domestic Violence Victim
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, 81, was hospitalized with serious injuries on Saturday, August 31, 2025, following a car accident in New Hampshire. According to his spokesman, Michael Ragusa, the incident occurred after Mr. Giuliani had stopped to assist a woman who was a victim of domestic violence.
Ragusa stated that Giuliani had pulled over to help the woman and called 911, remaining at the scene until police arrived. The accident happened shortly after he returned to his rental car, which was then struck from behind at high speed. The former mayor was transported to a Manchester-area hospital for treatment. His injuries include a fractured vertebrae, as well as multiple cuts and bruises to his left arm and lower leg. He is expected to remain hospitalized for two to three days and will require a brace for his recovery. “The mayor is in great spirits. He’s a beast. He survived 9/11,” Ragusa commented, as reported by digitaltrendstoday.com.
A Long and Controversial Career in Public Life
The accident is the latest dramatic event in the life of a public figure who has experienced soaring highs and precipitous falls. Giuliani first rose to national prominence in the 1980s as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, where he cultivated a reputation as a relentless prosecutor of organized crime and Wall Street corruption.
From Mob Buster to “America’s Mayor”
During his tenure as a federal prosecutor, Giuliani successfully used the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act to dismantle the leadership of New York’s powerful Mafia families in the famous “Mafia Commission Trial.” His tough-on-crime persona propelled him into politics, and after a narrow loss in 1989, he was elected the 107th Mayor of New York City in 1993, serving two terms until 2001.
As mayor, he implemented the controversial “broken windows” policing strategy, which targeted minor quality-of-life offenses with the goal of preventing more serious crimes. While crime rates dropped significantly during his administration, critics often pointed to a nationwide decline in crime and accused his policies of straining race relations.
Giuliani’s legacy was cemented by his leadership in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. His calm and decisive presence during the city’s darkest hours earned him international acclaim, the nickname “America’s Mayor,” and Time magazine’s Person of the Year award for 2001.
Association with Donald Trump and Legal Troubles
After an unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, Giuliani largely receded from the national political stage until re-emerging as a staunch supporter and later personal attorney for Donald Trump. His work for the former president, however, led to a series of legal and professional challenges that have defined the later part of his career.
Giuliani was a central figure in the Trump-Ukraine scandal that led to Trump’s first impeachment. He later spearheaded the legal efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, promoting numerous unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud. These actions had severe consequences:
- In June 2021, his law license was suspended in New York after a court found he made “demonstrably false and misleading statements.” He was later disbarred.
- He faced a massive $148 million defamation judgment for false statements he made about two Georgia election workers.
- He was indicted in Georgia and Arizona as part of investigations into efforts to interfere with the 2020 election results.
Despite his recent legal battles, his business partner and nurse practitioner, Maria Ryan, is overseeing his medical care and stated he is undergoing further tests. The incident in New Hampshire adds another unexpected chapter to the complex and polarizing story of Rudy Giuliani, a figure who has been both a celebrated hero and a condemned political operative.
