Tigers Stumble in Oakland, Drop Two Straight to Athletics

Tigers Suffer Back-to-Back Losses in Oakland

The Detroit Tigers, who have been dominating the American League Central for much of the season, hit a significant snag on their West Coast road trip, dropping two consecutive games to the Oakland Athletics. A dramatic walk-off loss in extra innings on Tuesday followed a stunning seventh-inning collapse on Monday, extending the Tigers’ losing streak to three games and marking a rare moment of vulnerability for the division leaders.

Despite the recent setbacks, the Tigers maintain a strong 78-56 record and a comfortable lead in the AL Central. However, the pair of losses in Sacramento have highlighted the challenges of maintaining momentum on the road against a resilient Athletics squad.

Extra-Inning Heartbreak Caps Second Straight Defeat

In a back-and-forth contest on Tuesday night, the Tigers fell to the Athletics 7-6 in 10 innings. The game concluded in frustrating fashion for Detroit when Oakland’s Darell Hernaiz drew a bases-loaded, walk-off walk to seal the victory.

The Tigers’ offense showed flashes of its usual power throughout the game. Key moments included:

  • Riley Greene’s Grand Slam: In the third inning, Greene electrified the lineup with his 32nd home run of the season, a grand slam that gave the Tigers a 4-3 lead.
  • Colt Keith’s Homer: Colt Keith added a solo shot in the fifth inning, his 12th of the year, to tie the game at 5-5.
  • Tenth-Inning Lead: Zach McKinstry appeared to play the hero in the top of the tenth, delivering an RBI single that put Detroit ahead 6-5.

However, the lead was short-lived. The Athletics rallied in the bottom of the frame, tying the game on an RBI double by Tyler Soderstrom before loading the bases and winning without another hit.

Seventh-Inning Collapse Sinks Skubal in Series Opener

The stage for Tuesday’s disappointment was set a night earlier, when the Tigers lost 8-3 after a catastrophic seventh inning. Ace pitcher Tarik Skubal had been in control for six innings, and Detroit held a 3-0 lead thanks to a solo home run from Gleyber Torres and a two-run double by Wenceel Perez in the sixth.

The game unraveled in the bottom of the seventh. After a solo homer by Colby Thomas, the Athletics loaded the bases. Skubal recorded two strikeouts and was one out away from escaping the jam, but A’s catcher Shea Langeliers crushed a 450-foot grand slam, giving Oakland a 6-3 lead. It was the first grand slam ever allowed in Skubal’s career. The A’s would add another two-run homer in the eighth to solidify their win.

Skubal (11-4) was charged with the loss, allowing six runs (only one earned) in 6.2 innings. Despite the difficult outcome, he struck out 12 batters, marking his 10th game this season with double-digit strikeouts. He is now just one such game away from tying Mickey Lolich’s single-season franchise record of 11, set in 1971, as noted by digitaltrendstoday.com.

Looking Ahead

While the two losses in Oakland are a blow, the Tigers’ dominant season has provided them with a substantial cushion in the AL Central. The team will look to salvage the final game of the series and snap their losing streak before heading to Kansas City to face the second-place Royals. Regrouping quickly will be crucial as Detroit aims to get back on track and prepare for a deep postseason run.
