Chelsea Fight Back to Lead West Ham in Tumultuous London Derby

Chelsea mounted an impressive comeback in a chaotic first half at the London Stadium on Friday, heading into the break with a 3-1 lead over West Ham United in a Premier League clash filled with goals, drama, and a pivotal VAR intervention.

The match, held on August 22, 2025, exploded into life just six minutes in. West Ham seized the early advantage through a moment of brilliance from Lucas Paquetá. The Brazilian midfielder capitalized on a cheap loss of possession by Chelsea’s 18-year-old debutant Estêvão, striding forward and unleashing what Sky Sports described as a “rocket” from 25 yards that flew past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez into the top corner. The early goal sent the home crowd into a frenzy, putting immediate pressure on a Chelsea side that had started their season with a goalless draw.

However, the Blues responded swiftly. In the 15th minute, a corner kick found its way to Marc Cucurella, who flicked the ball on at the near post for João Pedro to power home an unstoppable header from close range, levelling the score at 1-1.

The game’s most significant turning point came just moments later. West Ham thought they had retaken the lead in the 17th minute when Niclas Füllkrug fired the ball into the net. The celebrations were cut short, however, as a VAR review identified that defender Jean-Clair Todibo was marginally offside in the build-up. The goal was disallowed, and the momentum swung decisively in Chelsea’s favour.

According to The Guardian’s live report, Chelsea capitalized on this reprieve almost immediately. In the 23rd minute, Trevoh Chalobah won the ball from a dithering Paquetá and fed João Pedro, whose subsequent cross was emphatically slammed home by an onrushing Pedro Neto to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

The first half narrative was heavily influenced by the unexpected inclusion of Estêvão. The young winger was a last-minute replacement for star player Cole Palmer, who reportedly “felt something” and was withdrawn as a precaution during the warm-up. After his costly error for West Ham’s opener, Estêvão redeemed himself spectacularly in the 33rd minute. He embarked on a sensational, high-paced dribble into the box, drawing multiple defenders before squaring the ball for Enzo Fernandez to tap in Chelsea’s third goal from six yards out.

The flurry of goals left the home supporters audibly frustrated, with the atmosphere at the London Stadium quieting considerably as the half wore on. For West Ham manager Graham Potter, whose side was coming off a 3-0 defeat to Sunderland, the first-half collapse after such a promising start will be a major concern. The Hammers made just one change from that loss, with Tomáš Souček returning to the midfield. Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca will be pleased with his team’s clinical response and attacking verve after a shaky start, as they look to secure a crucial early-season victory.
