Red Sox Place HR Leader Wilyer Abreu on IL, Call Up Top Prospect Jhostynxon ‘The Password’ Garcia

The Boston Red Sox made a series of significant roster moves on Thursday, placing their leading home run hitter, outfielder Wilyer Abreu, on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain. To fill the void, the team has called up one of its most exciting young talents, outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, from Triple-A Worcester. The moves come at a critical juncture for the Red Sox, who are in the midst of a tight American League Wild Card race and have just begun a pivotal four-game series against the New York Yankees.

Abreu, who has been a cornerstone of the Red Sox offense this season, suffered the calf injury on Sunday. According to reports from ESPN, the injured list placement is retroactive to Monday. Abreu leads the team with 22 home runs and has been a consistent run producer, hitting .253 with 69 RBIs in 108 games. Despite the setback, manager Alex Cora expressed optimism that Abreu would only miss the minimum amount of time. “I think it’s the right move, and hopefully he’ll be back with us as soon as possible,” Cora said before Thursday’s game in New York.

Stepping into the spotlight is 22-year-old Jhostynxon Garcia, Boston’s No. 3 prospect. Garcia, who signed as a non-drafted free agent from Venezuela in 2019, has earned the fan-bestowed nickname “The Password” due to the unique spelling of his first name. He has had a stellar season in the minors, splitting time between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. Combined, he has hit .289 with 20 home runs, 73 RBIs, and an .875 OPS. His performance at Worcester has been particularly impressive, where he posted a .303 batting average with 17 homers and 56 RBIs.

Manager Alex Cora praised Garcia’s abilities, highlighting his power and defensive skills. “He swings a lot,” Cora noted. “Drives the ball to right-center, can do that with two strikes. He’s a great defender and a good baserunner.” While Garcia was not in the lineup for Thursday’s series opener, he is expected to start in center field on Friday, making his major league debut against the team’s fiercest rival.

The promotion of Garcia was part of a broader roster shuffle as the Red Sox look for a spark. The team also recalled infielder David Hamilton and pitcher Richard Fitts from Worcester. To make room on the 40-man roster, infielder Abraham Toro was designated for assignment. Toro had been a valuable contributor earlier in the season, hitting .239 with 7 homers and 27 RBIs in 77 games. “We’re not here without him,” Cora said of Toro. “He did an amazing job.”

These moves follow the recent signing of first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, a former Silver Slugger and Gold Glove winner who was brought in on August 18 to shore up the infield. The flurry of activity underscores the urgency for a Red Sox team that has lost eight of its last 12 games. As of Thursday, Boston holds a 69-59 record and trails the Yankees by two games for the AL’s top wild-card position. With the season winding down, the Red Sox are increasingly relying on their youth to energize their playoff push, and all eyes will be on “The Password” as he steps onto the big stage in the Bronx.
