The Powerball jackpot has surged to an estimated $700 million after no ticket matched all six numbers in the drawing held on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. The grand prize for the next drawing on Saturday, August 23, will have a lump-sum cash option of approximately $316.3 million before taxes.
The winning numbers for the Wednesday night drawing were 31, 59, 62, 65, and 68, with the red Powerball number being 5. The Power Play multiplier drawn was 2x. The jackpot for the drawing stood at an estimated $643 million.
While the grand prize remains elusive, the drawing produced numerous significant winners across the country. According to the Ohio Lottery, a ticket sold at a Circle K in Seville matched all five white balls to win the game’s second-tier prize of $1 million. Ohio also saw two tickets win $100,000 each. Those lucky tickets were purchased at Vine Street Tobacco & Beverage in Willoughby and a Kroger in Sylvania. In total, Ohio had over 34,000 winning tickets with prizes ranging from $4 to $1 million.
Other states also reported a high number of winners. The California Lottery announced that 144,296 tickets won prizes in the state, including three tickets that matched four white balls plus the Powerball, each earning $25,597. In California, prize amounts are pari-mutuel, meaning they vary based on ticket sales and the number of winners. Similarly, the Wisconsin Lottery reported 17,186 winning tickets within the state from the same drawing.
The Powerball jackpot has been steadily growing for over two months, consistently rolling over since it was last won on Saturday, May 31, 2025. In that drawing, a single ticket sold in California claimed a grand prize worth an estimated $207 million. Since then, a series of drawings without a jackpot winner has fueled the prize’s climb, capturing national attention.
Powerball is a multi-state lottery game available in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. ET. To play, participants select five numbers from a pool of 1 to 69 and one red Powerball number from a pool of 1 to 26. Each ticket costs $2 per play.
Players can add the Power Play option for an additional $1 to multiply non-jackpot winnings. The Match 5 prize of $1 million is automatically doubled to $2 million if Power Play is purchased. For an extra dollar, players in select states can also opt for the Double Play feature, which enters their numbers into a separate drawing with a top cash prize of $10 million.
The odds of winning the grand prize are 1 in 292,201,338, though the overall odds of winning any prize are significantly better at approximately 1 in 24.9. Jackpot winners have the choice between receiving their prize as a 30-year graduated annuity or as a lump-sum cash payment. As lottery players look forward to the next drawing, they are reminded to check their tickets carefully and to play responsibly.
