Eagles Bolster Receiving Corps by Acquiring John Metchie III from Texans

The Philadelphia Eagles have added a new weapon for quarterback Jalen Hurts, acquiring wide receiver John Metchie III from the Houston Texans in a trade announced on Sunday, August 17, 2025. In exchange for Metchie, the Texans will receive tight end Harrison Bryant. The deal also includes a swap of future day-three draft picks, according to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

This move provides the Eagles with much-needed depth at the wide receiver position as they prepare for their season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. Last season, Philadelphia’s passing attack struggled, averaging just 187.9 receiving yards per game, which ranked among the bottom four teams in the league. The offense leaned heavily on a dominant rushing game, second only to the Baltimore Ravens. Metchie will join a talented receiving room headlined by stars A.J. Brown and his former Alabama teammate, DeVonta Smith. The group also includes veterans Jahan Dotson and Johnny Wilson, giving Hurts another viable target to spread the field.

For the Texans, the decision to trade Metchie comes as they manage a deep and talented group of receivers, including Nico Collins, Christian Kirk, and rookie Jayden Higgins. Metchie, a 2022 second-round pick, was becoming crowded out on the depth chart. In return, Houston acquires Harrison Bryant, a tight end who signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Eagles this offseason. Bryant, originally a fourth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2020, spent last season with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he recorded nine catches for 86 yards in 13 games while dealing with an ankle injury.

Metchie’s journey to Philadelphia is a testament to his remarkable resilience. After a stellar college career at Alabama, where he won the Jon Cornish Trophy twice as the top Canadian in NCAA football, he was selected 44th overall by the Texans in the 2022 NFL Draft. However, his professional career was immediately put on hold. In July 2022, Metchie announced he had been diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia and would miss his entire rookie season to undergo treatment.

He made an inspiring comeback, returning to the field for the 2023 season. His perseverance and courage were recognized when the Pro Football Writers of America honored him with the 2024 George Halas Award, given to the NFL player, coach, or staff member who overcomes the most adversity to succeed. In the 2024 season, the 25-year-old receiver set career highs, catching 24 passes for 254 yards and scoring his first professional touchdown. Over his two seasons with the Texans, he accumulated 40 receptions for 412 yards and one touchdown in 29 games, according to Pro-Football-Reference.

Now in Philadelphia, Metchie has an opportunity for a fresh start and a more significant role in an offense looking to improve its aerial attack. He is heading into the final year of his rookie contract, giving him a prime chance to prove his value. The Eagles hope his addition will help balance their offense and provide another reliable pass-catcher for Hurts. The Texans, meanwhile, add a piece at tight end and clear a path for their other receivers to see more playing time. The Eagles will debut their new-look offense on September 4 against the Cowboys, while the Texans open their season on September 7 against the Los Angeles Rams.
