Southeastern Wisconsin is facing a significant severe weather threat this weekend, as a slow-moving weather system prompted the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a series of severe thunderstorm warnings and a widespread flood watch for the region on Saturday, August 16, 2025. The primary concerns are heavy, repeated rainfall leading to potential flash flooding, alongside damaging wind gusts.
The turbulent weather is attributed to a quasi-stationary front stalled over southern Wisconsin. Meteorologists describe this setup as a “conveyor belt” for storms, capable of bringing multiple rounds of heavy rain to the same locations over several days. This pattern is expected to persist through early Tuesday, August 19, raising the risk of flash flooding, particularly in areas where soil is already saturated and rivers are high from recent storms.
Throughout Saturday afternoon, the NWS issued a cascade of alerts. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was put into effect until 7 p.m. CDT for numerous counties, including Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine, Kenosha, Walworth, Jefferson, Ozaukee, Washington, Sheboygan, Dodge, and Fond du Lac. Concurrently, a Flood Watch was issued for all of southeastern Wisconsin, beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday and extending into Sunday morning, due to the threat of excessive rainfall.
As the afternoon progressed, specific Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued for various counties as a strong line of storms tracked southeast at approximately 40 to 45 mph. Warnings covered parts of Waukesha, Jefferson, Ozaukee, Washington, and Dodge counties, among others. Reports from Dodge County indicated that the strong winds had already brought down trees and caused some power outages. Officials also advised those attending the Dodge County Fair in Beaver Dam to seek immediate shelter as the storms approached.
