Stimulus Update August 2025: No Fourth Federal Check, But New Rebate Proposals and State Payments Emerge

As Americans navigate the economic landscape of 2025, questions about further financial relief persist. While rumors of a fourth round of federal stimulus checks continue to circulate, official sources confirm that the pandemic-era Economic Impact Payments have concluded. However, new proposals for federal rebates are being discussed, and several states are actively distributing their own financial aid to residents.

The End of Federal Stimulus and Final Claim Deadlines

The U.S. government, through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the U.S. Department of the Treasury, has officially issued all three rounds of Economic Impact Payments. These programs distributed over 476 million payments totaling approximately $814 billion to eligible households during the COVID-19 crisis. The IRS confirms there are no plans for a new, fourth federal stimulus payment.

For individuals who may have missed out on previous payments, the window to claim them is closing. The deadlines to file for the first and second stimulus checks have passed. However, taxpayers still have an opportunity to claim the third payment, which was worth up to $1,400 per person. This can be done by filing a 2021 tax return to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit. The final deadline to file this 2021 return is April 15, 2025. After this date, any unclaimed funds will become the property of the U.S. Treasury.

Taxpayers can verify the amounts of any payments they received by accessing their individual online account on the IRS website. The “Get My Payment” tool is no longer active.

A New ‘Tariff Rebate’ Proposal Surfaces

While broad stimulus is off the table, new ideas for direct payments are being explored. On July 25, 2025, former President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of a “tariff rebate check” for American taxpayers, funded by revenue from new tariffs. Following these remarks, Missouri Senator Josh Hawley announced the American Worker Rebate Act of 2025, which aims to send checks to working Americans. It is crucial to note that this is currently a legislative proposal and has not been passed into law. This follows an earlier, speculative idea from February about a $5,000 “DOGE dividend,” which has not seen further development.

State-Level Relief Programs Provide Support

In the absence of new federal aid, many states have implemented their own relief programs in 2025. These initiatives vary widely in scope, eligibility, and payment amounts. Residents should consult their official state tax department websites for the most accurate information.

Notable state programs include:

  • Alaska: The state continues its long-standing Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) program. The 2024 dividend, being paid in summer 2025, is $1,702 per eligible resident. This is an annual payment from the state’s oil wealth, not a federal stimulus.
  • Georgia: For the third consecutive year, the state is issuing tax rebates of up to $250 for single filers and $500 for married couples, thanks to a state budget surplus.
  • New York: In addition to the ongoing School Tax Relief (STAR) program for property owners, the state has reportedly proposed inflation relief checks of $300 to $500, pending budget approval.
  • Pennsylvania: An expanded Property Tax/Rent Rebate program is providing eligible seniors and individuals with disabilities rebates of up to $1,000.
  • Virginia: The state is offering one-time tax rebates of up to $200 for individuals and $400 for joint filers who had a tax liability in 2024.

Beware of Scams

With discussions of payments, the risk of scams increases. The Better Business Bureau and the IRS warn that the government will never initiate contact via phone call, text message, or email to ask for personal or financial information to issue a payment. Be wary of any communication that claims to require a fee or personal details to receive a rebate or stimulus check. Always rely on official government websites for information.
