A wave of concern washed over the approximately 50,000 fans at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday night as Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowl left guard Landon Dickerson was carted off the field with an apparent right leg injury. The incident occurred late in the team’s only open practice of the summer, casting a shadow over the reigning Super Bowl champions’ training camp.
The injury happened during a passing drill. As quarterback Jalen Hurts completed a pass to running back Saquon Barkley on the opposite side of the field, Dickerson went down. The practice, which had been running for over two hours, came to a standstill. The crowd fell silent as teammates gathered around the 26-year-old guard, who remained on the ground for several minutes. Medical staff attended to him before helping him off the field. Dickerson was visibly struggling to put weight on his right leg and was subsequently taken to the locker room on a cart for further evaluation.
Adding to the concern is Dickerson’s recent appearance on the team’s injury report. He was listed as a limited participant in Saturday’s practice with a knee injury but was removed from the report before Sunday’s session. The Eagles did not run any further plays with the first-team offense after Dickerson’s departure. Veteran offensive lineman Brett Toth stepped in at left guard in his absence.
The potential loss of Dickerson for any length of time would be a significant blow to the Eagles. He is a cornerstone of what is widely considered one of the best, if not the best, offensive lines in the NFL. A second-round draft pick in 2021, Dickerson has established himself as one of the league’s elite interior linemen. He is a three-time Pro Bowl selection (2022, 2023, 2024) and, according to ESPN, is one of only five guards to earn a Pro Bowl nod every year since 2022.
His value to the team was underscored this past offseason when, on March 11, 2024, he signed a four-year, $84 million contract extension. The deal, as reported by multiple outlets, briefly made him the highest-paid guard in NFL history. Dickerson was an integral part of the Eagles’ run to a Super Bowl LIX championship and was a key blocker for Saquon Barkley’s historic 2024 season, in which the running back rushed for over 2,000 yards.
Dickerson’s career has been marked by resilience. He overcame several injuries during his college career at both Florida State and Alabama, including a significant knee injury in the 2020 SEC Championship Game. Despite that injury, he famously dressed for the National Championship game and entered for the final snaps of Alabama’s victory.
As of now, the Eagles have not released an official statement on the severity of the injury. The team and its fanbase are anxiously awaiting an update on a player who is critical to their aspirations of defending their Super Bowl title. The sight of a player of Dickerson’s caliber being carted off the field is a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in the NFL.
