Active Shooter at Fort Stewart Prompts Base-Wide Lockdown, Casualties Reported

HINESVILLE, Ga. – An active shooter incident at Fort Stewart on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, has resulted in casualties and prompted a full lockdown of the sprawling U.S. Army installation, according to law enforcement and military officials. The situation remains ongoing as authorities work to secure the area.

The incident reportedly occurred in the vicinity of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (2ABCT) area. Local news outlet WTOC reported that law enforcement has identified one suspect and that four individuals have been transported to a hospital for treatment. In a social media post around 11:51 a.m. EDT, Fort Stewart officials confirmed that casualties have been reported and that the situation is still developing.

In response to the threat, the Commander of Fort Stewart issued an immediate lockdown for the entire base. This includes the main post, the 2nd Brigade area, and both Wright Army Airfield and Evans Army Airfield. All gates to the installation have been closed, halting all inbound and outbound traffic. Personnel and residents on the base have been instructed to lockdown all facilities immediately, stay inside, and secure all windows and doors. Officials also advised the community to keep telephone lines open for emergency communication and to report accountability to their leadership.

The lockdown has extended to educational facilities on and near the base. Community Superintendent Brian Perry confirmed that Diamond Elementary School, Kessler Elementary School, and Murray Elementary School, which are located on the installation, are in a full lockdown per a Department of Defense alert. In a statement, Perry assured parents, “There is no immediate threat to the schools at this time. We will send a message when an all clear is announced.”

As a precautionary measure, several nearby Liberty County Schools have also initiated a “soft lockdown.” These schools include Button Gwinnett Elementary, Joseph Martin Elementary, and Snelson Golden Middle School. This measure is intended to secure the school perimeters while the situation on the base is being managed.

Fort Stewart is the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River, covering approximately 280,000 acres across six counties in coastal Georgia. It is the home of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and supports a large population of active-duty soldiers, their families, civilian employees, and military retirees. The base is a critical power projection platform for the U.S. Army, capable of deploying armored forces rapidly around the globe.

The base’s public affairs office has stated they are assessing the threat and will provide updates as more information becomes available. The community is urged to follow official channels for the latest information and to avoid the area surrounding the installation.

This is a developing story, and details will be updated as they are confirmed by authorities.
