49ers’ Next Man Up: Bethune Steps In for Injured Fred Warner

A Devastating Blow to the Defense

The San Francisco 49ers were dealt a devastating blow during their Week 6 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a game that cost them more than just a mark in the loss column. Star linebacker Fred Warner, a four-time All-Pro and the undisputed leader of the defense, suffered a season-ending fractured and dislocated right ankle. The injury, which occurred on a routine play in the first quarter, has sidelined the team’s iron man, who had missed only one previous game in his entire career. Warner underwent successful surgery and is expected to make a full recovery for the 2026 offseason, but his absence leaves a monumental void in the heart of the 49ers’ defense.

Enter Tatum Bethune

Stepping into those formidable shoes is second-year linebacker Tatum Bethune. A 2024 seventh-round draft pick from Florida State, Bethune has gone from a core special teams player to the defense’s new signal-caller. He will now wear the “green dot” helmet, responsible for relaying plays from the sideline and organizing the defense on the field—a role Warner executed flawlessly.

While replacing a future Hall of Famer is an impossible task, the 49ers’ coaching staff has expressed unwavering confidence in Bethune’s ability to rise to the occasion. Defensive Coordinator Robert Saleh noted that Bethune took significant reps with the first-team defense during OTAs when Warner was resting. “Tatum’s made of the right stuff. He works the right way, he communicates the right way, he does things the right way,” Saleh told reporters. “This is now Tatum’s opportunity and the growth that he’ll experience between now and game 17 is going to be significant.”

Head coach Kyle Shanahan echoed this sentiment, calling Bethune “more than ready for this opportunity” and describing his performance after Warner’s injury as “very inspiring” upon reviewing the game film. After entering the game against Tampa Bay, Bethune played 45 snaps and led the team with 10 tackles.

A Leader in the Making

Though he may not possess Warner’s elite sideline-to-sideline speed, Bethune is known as a classic “run-and-hit” linebacker with strong communication skills. Teammates have praised his development and leadership. Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir shared that Warner had been actively mentoring Bethune, often having him “break down the team” in the huddle to build his confidence. “Just hearing him talk, I know he’s made of the right stuff,” Lenoir said. “I’ve got the upmost confidence in him.”

Bethune himself understands the gravity of the situation but remains focused on his own game. “He’s the best in the league, probably a future Hall of Famer,” Bethune said of Warner. “So that’s big shoes to fill, honestly… I’ll just be me, Tatum Bethune. I’m here for a reason.”

Trial by Fire and Bolstering the Ranks

Bethune’s first test as a starter will be a significant one, as the 49ers face the Atlanta Falcons and their top-ranked rushing attack on “Sunday Night Football.” The Falcons are led by running back Bijan Robinson, who is coming off a dominant 170-yard performance. This matchup will be a crucial early indicator of how the defense can adapt without its anchor.

To address the sudden lack of depth, the 49ers are exploring all options. According to digitaltrendstoday.com, the team recently hosted workouts for five free-agent linebackers, including veterans Ben Niemann and Jalen Reeves-Maybin. While no signings were made immediately, it shows the front office is actively looking to add support. In the meantime, rookie linebacker Nick Martin, a third-round pick who has been inactive for the first six weeks, is expected to make his NFL debut, likely beginning with a role on special teams.

As Saleh aptly put it, “Tatum just needs to be Tatum. He doesn’t have to make any plays that are spectacular. He just needs to make his play.” For the 49ers, the path forward relies on the next man up embracing his moment and leading a resilient defense through a challenging new chapter.
