Navigating a Storm of Injuries
The San Francisco 49ers entered their Week 7 “Sunday Night Football” matchup against the Atlanta Falcons defined by resilience, as the team continues to navigate a staggering number of injuries to its star players. While the return of key personnel offers a glimmer of hope, the active roster for the primetime clash at Levi’s® Stadium highlights the significant challenges the team has faced early in the 2025 season.
Quarterback Carousel and Offensive Adjustments
For the third consecutive game, the 49ers were without starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who was officially ruled out with a persistent toe injury. Purdy initially sustained the injury in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, and after a brief return in Week 4, the team has opted for a more cautious approach to his recovery. He is reportedly expected to return for the Week 8 game against the Houston Texans.
In his place, veteran Mac Jones made his fifth start for San Francisco. Jones, who has managed his own minor knee and oblique injuries, has provided a steady hand, leading the team to a 3-1 record in his starts. His 1,252 passing yards are the most by a 49ers quarterback in his first four starts with the team.
The offense received a monumental boost with the return of All-Pro tight end George Kittle. Activated from the Injured Reserve list, Kittle played for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 1. According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, Kittle returned without being on a snap count, providing a much-needed weapon for Jones. However, the receiving corps remains shorthanded, with rookie Ricky Pearsall missing his third straight game with a knee injury.
Defensive Unit Battered but Resilient
The 49ers’ defense has been hit particularly hard by injuries. The unit is grappling with the season-ending loss of star pass rusher Nick Bosa, who suffered a torn ACL in Week 3. The latest major blow came just before the Falcons game when All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner was placed on the Injured Reserve list with an ankle injury. Defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos was also unavailable due to knee and hamstring issues.
In response to the depleted linebacker corps, the 49ers reportedly worked out five linebackers during the week, a clear sign of the front office’s proactive approach to roster management. The defense did see the return of defensive tackle Kevin Givens, who was activated from Injured Reserve to make his 2025 season debut.
Even the team’s healthy veterans have faced challenges. All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams was recently fined $11,593 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness during the team’s Week 6 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A Commitment to the Community
Despite the adversity on the field, the 49ers organization continues to make a positive impact off it. The 49ers Foundation recently honored two Santa Clara High School students, Cassien Delmas and Jean Yoo, for their passion and dedication to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math). Both students are part of the 49ers STEM Leadership Institute, a program that supports promising students in their academic pursuits. As reported by digitaltrendstoday.com, such community initiatives are a core part of the team’s identity.
Delmas and Yoo were celebrated as the “STEAM Students of the Game” and received a special, once-in-a-lifetime tour of Levi’s® Stadium before the game. “It’s great to know I’m backed by the 49ers, which is such a big team and a lot of people are inspired by them, so I feel blessed that they’re here to help me out,” Delmas said. The recognition serves as a powerful reminder of the organization’s strength and commitment to its community, even as its players battle through a challenging season on the gridiron.
